Gulf Water Conference (3rd)

Towards Efficient Utilization of Water Resources in the Gulf
1997-03-08 ~ 1997-03-13 , Muscat

The third edition of the Gulf Water Conference 1997 convened in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman from 8 to 13 March 1997, under the theme “Towards Efficient Utilization of Water Resources in the Gulf.” This gathering emerged at a time when Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries were intensifying efforts to address the region’s acute water scarcity through innovative strategies and technological adaptation. Rather than focusing solely on individual technologies, the conference spotlighted the broader challenge of using limited water resources more efficiently across all sectors of society.

Participants included engineers, water planners, government officials, and representatives from research institutions, all bringing perspectives shaped by the Gulf’s unique environmental and socio‑economic conditions. Daily technical sessions explored practical approaches to maximizing existing water supplies and reducing systemic losses. Case studies from national utilities and regional programs helped bridge academic research with operational realities faced by water managers in the GCC.

More than a forum for technical exchange, the conference also served as a strategic platform for regional cooperation. Delegates debated policy instruments, institutional frameworks, and cross‑border partnerships to support efficient water use. By the end of the week, there was a renewed sense of shared purpose among member states to implement integrated water management practices that could sustain growth while safeguarding precious freshwater resources.
